Informational Update: July 30, 2020

We know there is a lot of information coming at you quickly, and it is a lot to digest. Thank you in advance for reading this update thoroughly, as well as the attached / linked safety protocols that will provide your family with many additional details about next week’s scheduled “Band Camp” practices.

Yesterday, the Illinois High School Association made a major announcement regarding fall sports. While this does not impact our band program directly, the decision to move football to 2021 will naturally bring up questions for our students and families. Anticipating your questions, please read the following Q & A:

Q & A for DGN Band Families

Q: Now that IHSA has announced several fall sports (including football) have been pushed to 2021, will DGN still hold a “Band Camp” next week?

A: YES! We believe that it is important to take advantage of the time we have been given to safely bring students together and make music! Let’s be honest: we are navigating a landscape that is continually changing, and we simply do not know how many opportunities we will have, in the near future, to come together in person and make music. Our staff has a plan to work on skills and fundamentals next week that will have long-term benefits for student musicians. Additionally, we know that students are craving the opportunity to get back to routines, interact with their peers, and pursue goals with others. Having watched the students in our Color Guard and Drumline come back to campus this week, we see the positive impact this time together is having on everyone!

Q: Will the DGN Marching Band perform during the “winter football” season announced by IHSA?

A: The challenges of preparing/practicing/performing in cold weather would be many, and we expect to be focusing on different curricular goals in February, March and April. We will consider developing limited opportunities for students to engage on a volunteer basis (not unlike a basketball pep-band) but we do not plan to run our traditional marching band program in the winter.

Q: There are so many unknowns about the 2020-21 academic year. Should I stick with band?

A: Absolutely! We sure hope you will, because we have big plans to engage our students in meaningful music making this year, no matter what form or schedule emerges as the District 99 plan. Will the band experience feel typical this year? Of course not; few things in our lives feel typical these days. But that does not mean we stop moving forward. One of the themes that emerged in our Student Leadership workshop earlier this week was “Re-imagining the Unimaginable.” Rest assured that your faculty and staff will be working hard to provide the members of the DGN Bands with a high-quality experience this year!

It is also worth noting that the school is not accepting requests to change schedules and/or add additional courses to a student schedule. All of the planning that is being done to open school in either hybrid, or remote formats, requires administrators to work with pre-defined class lists. If a student were to contact their counselor and request a schedule change at this time, the student’s only option would be to add a “study hall.”

Q: How will Jazz Band auditions work this year? Will there still be jazz classes in a remote or hybrid schedule?

A: Yes, we will have jazz band classes this year! However we are adjusting the way students audition for the Jazz Lab Band and Jazz Ensemble. This year’s auditions will be through video submission. We are working to finalize those details this week, and we will be getting that information out to band families early next week.

The DGN Fine Arts Department will adapt as variables develop throughout the school year.  For now, we are focused on a safe start that provides students with a rewarding and positive experience through the exploration of Fine Arts.

Informational Update: July 22, 2020

Trojan Marching Band Leadership Team
Members of our Student Leadership Team will meet virtually on Monday, July 27th for our previously-scheduled Leadership Clinic. Drum Majors & Section Captains should monitor email, later this week, for a Zoom link and details about the day. The Ropes Course training for Leadership Team has been cancelled. We do not currently anticipate any Leadership Team training to be held outside of the session scheduled on July 27.

Color Guard and Drumline (July 28-30)
Students in the Color Guard and Drumline will meet as scheduled for rehearsals on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of next week (July 28-30). You should have received communication about an adjusted schedule for those days from your instructors.

Band Camp (Week of August 3)
We are waiting until next week before announcing specific plans for the week of August 3rd. We have a plan ready to roll out, but are awaiting additional guidance from the Health Department, and approval from the District 99 Administration, before moving forward. All of our plans include socially-distanced practices occurring only outdoors, the use of face coverings, and groups of 50 or less. Health screenings will be mandated at the beginning of any practice session, and rehearsals will be no longer than 3 hours per day. We hope to share the specific plan early next week, but it is important to know that even then the plan will be subject to later revisions based on emerging guidance from the Health Department and any state-level guidance issued regarding fall sports and activities.

Band Parent Meeting
The band parent meeting scheduled for August 5th is currently suspended. The District 99 Board of Education will be voting on school reopening plans on August 3rd, and, subsequently, our faculty will need time to react to those plans before disseminating information relative to the 2020-21 academic year. We will communicate with families when the meeting will be rescheduled, or if the information will be disseminated electronically.

Our faculty is hard at work building plans for the school year, and we are working with our administration to ensure we have as many options available to our students as possible. We appreciate your flexibility and patience and your support for your student's music education.

Eyes with Pride,
Jessen T. Smith and Brayer Teague

Tour Viability Update: July 10, 2020

Dear DGN Band Students and Families:

After reviewing guidance from the Illinois Department of Health, and considering current COVID-19 trends in the United States, we do not foresee a scenario in which group travel of any kind would be deemed prudent or safe as early as December. Current guidance from the Illinois State Board of Education includes instructions for school districts to cancel "field trips," even at the local level. The viability of NCAA athletic competitions this fall is still very much in question, as are events like the Outback Bowl where the DGN Band was invited to perform on New Year's Day, 2021.

For these reasons, and with student and staff safety our number one priority, we have made the difficult decision to suspend DGN Band tour planning for the 2020-21 academic year, and cancel our scheduled tour. We suspect this news will not come as a surprise to our band families, but the reality is very disappointing, nonetheless.

Our faculty believes that there are wonderful, enriching, and authentic music experiences that can only be experienced through the lens of educational travel. For that reason, DGN music ensembles have toured with frequency for the past three decades, and we look forward to the day we can safely resume this important part of the programming and educational experience we endeavor to share with our students.

Our faculty will strive to plan special and unique performance opportunities for our students, to the greatest extent possible, during these unprecedented times. We are very mindful of the fact that the students in our program choose to be invested in the arts because they appreciate the opportunity to make music with their peers and express themselves in a collaborative environment. We will continue to do all we can to offer students musical opportunities in a safe environment.

Eyes with Pride,

Jessen T. Smith and Brayer Teague

Informational Update: July 1, 2020

Dear DGN Band Students and Families:

Welcome to the DGN Bands!  We’re very excited to have your family as a part of our program.  Over the years our band has developed an outstanding reputation for superior performance and tremendous musicality.  Established in 1929, this is the 92nd year that our band will perform for the community.  We again have a wonderful group of students registered for the program and we are confident that we will all work to uphold – and enhance – the fine reputation of our DGN Bands.

We have an exciting year planned for the members of the Downers Grove North High School Bands. We acknowledge, entering the school year, that the COVID-19 Pandemic will necessitate ongoing adjustments to traditional DGN Band procedures and schedules. All plans are being developed with student and staff safety at the forefront, and in compliance with state guidance/county Health Department mandates. Our collective experiences in 2020-21 will, undoubtedly, be different than what we would typically experience in a non-pandemic environment. But, even with needed adjustments, we are confident that the “band family” will provide students with an opportunity to express themselves artistically, collaborate with others, and feel connected to our school community!

District 99 is currently developing plans for 2020-21 instruction. As we await additional information and direction, our Band Staff is developing a series of options so that we are prepared to move forward appropriately. We anticipate the “Phase 4” status of Illinois will require modifications and adjustments to several of the traditional DGN Band program components that begin in just a few weeks. That will include our Leadership Team training for Drum Majors & Section Captains, our “Band Camp” week for all members of the Trojan Marching Band, and our Parent/Guardian Meeting scheduled for August 5th. We hope to share more specific plans the week of July 20, but until then we ask you to please continue holding our previously published practices in your family calendar.

Members of the Color Guard and Percussion section will receive ongoing updates, via email, from their instructional staff about July practices. We have developed a tentative schedule to hold some of the July practices on campus, but that plan is still under review by our Administration as we monitor guidance from both the Health Department and the IHSA. We will share updates with families as information is available.

We shared with our Student Leadership Team, earlier this week, that we are not able to move forward with the previously announced “Les Miserables” themed field show this year; we plan to hold this concept for Fall 2021. While we are unable to provide new music at this time, we can share that students should not continue independent work this summer on music from Les Miserables. Students should continue to learn and refine the DGN School Song
